WooCommerce Feature Category Widget

WooCommerce Feature Category Widget turns a plain text list of product categories into a visual promotion. Instead of a link, each featured category appears with its category image, its name and its description, in any widget-ready area of your store. Add it to a sidebar, a home page widget zone, a footer or a landing page, and point shoppers directly at the collections you actually want them to see.

Most stores treat category navigation as a utility: a list of every category, in alphabetical order, given equal weight. That works for a shopper who already knows what they want, but it does nothing for the visitor who arrived on your home page with no particular plan. Merchandising means making choices about what to show first, and this widget is the tool for making those choices visible.

Feature the categories that matter

Choose which categories to promote and where they appear. A seasonal collection on the home page during a campaign, your highest-margin range in the shop sidebar, a complementary category on a related product page — each widget instance is configured independently, so different parts of your store can promote different things.

Because the widget is configured per instance rather than globally, you are not locked into one arrangement. Swap the featured categories at the start of a promotion and swap them back afterwards, without touching a template file or writing any code.

Category images, done properly

The widget pulls the category image you have already set on each product category in WooCommerce, so there is nothing extra to upload or maintain. Set the image once in Products > Categories and the widget uses it everywhere.

You also control which WordPress image size the widget uses for each instance. That matters more than it sounds: a widget in a narrow sidebar and a widget spanning a home page column need different image dimensions, and picking the right registered size means the browser downloads an appropriately sized file rather than scaling down a full-size image. It keeps the page light and the images sharp.

WooCommerce Feature Category Widget – Why images beat text links

A category image gives a shopper information a link cannot. It communicates what is inside the category, what the products look like, and whether the range is likely to be relevant to them, all before they click. On a home page, where a visitor is deciding within a few seconds whether your store sells what they came for, that visual signal does real work.

The effect compounds on mobile, where screen space is scarce and a wall of text links reads as an obstacle rather than an invitation. A small number of well-chosen, clearly illustrated categories converts better than a comprehensive list nobody reads.

Simple by design

There is no separate admin panel and no settings page to learn. The widget lives in the standard WordPress widget interface, alongside every other widget on your site. Drag it into a widget area, select your categories, choose an image size and a title, and you are finished.

This is deliberate. The plugin does one job, adds nothing to your admin menu, and loads nothing on the front end beyond what it needs to render. For a store already running several plugins, that restraint is a feature.

WooCommerce Feature Category Widget is actively maintained since 2015

WooCommerce Feature Category Widget was first released in April 2015 and has been maintained continuously since. It requires WordPress 6.4 or higher, WooCommerce 8.0 or higher, and has been tested up to WordPress 6.7.2 and WooCommerce 9.7.0. The plugin is fully compatible with WooCommerce HPOS custom order tables, 100% WPML compatible and translation ready.

Maintenance is not cosmetic. The PHP codebase was refactored to Composer with autoloading for cleaner, faster execution, and the most recent releases have focused on security: category names, images, custom titles, term links and descriptions are all escaped on output, admin AJAX handlers are restricted to authenticated administrators, and request parameters in the updater are sanitised. Every WordPress and WooCommerce major release is tested for compatibility. The full release history is public in the changelog.

If you are new to widget areas, the WordPress widgets documentation covers where they appear and how to add them in both block and classic themes.

Works well alongside

Featured categories are the promotional layer of your navigation. The browsing layer sits underneath. Pair this widget with WooCommerce Categories Ultra Widget, which gives shoppers a full AJAX category tree with product counts once they want to explore beyond your featured picks. Predictive Search Premium for WooCommerce covers the shoppers who arrive knowing exactly what they want, and WooCommerce Product Sort and Display Premium hands them control of the listing once they land in a category. Because this widget is image-led, running it alongside a3 Lazy Load keeps those category images from slowing down your home page.
